“I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth and here it is."
~ Matthew 25:25
~ Matthew 25:25
This verse occurs in a parable Jesus is telling to the people and his disciples about a man going on a trip. The parable is supposed to be representative of the Kingdom of Heaven. Before the man leaves, he entrusts different amounts of gold to his three servants. The two who received multiple bags of gold doubled the man's money. The one who received only one bag, hid the gold and made nothing. His explanation for his action is reflected in the above scripture.
This parable reinforces the idea that we can’t be afraid of investing in and using our gifts. Once we use what we've been given, as God sees fit, He will multiply and magnify those talents so that we can do even more! However, the servant with only one bag of gold said, “I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth and here it is” (25). Fear is not of God, and it shows a lack of faith. Jesus demonstrates this when the man in the parable praises the other servants saying, “You have been faithful ...,” (21 & 23) presumably because they were not afraid to invest. We cannot allow fear to keep us from doing God’s will. Faith trumps fear.
