"I don't see black people" |
A groundbreaking new study demonstrates that white children
are at increasing risk in our country of growing up to be white
supremacists. Seventy-five percent
of white youth grow up in two parent homes, which makes them twice as likely to
be prejudiced against people of color.
If their parents aren’t self-conscious and explicitly anti-racist,
there’s a statistically significant chance for them to fall victim to twice the
privilege, twice the white washed history (i.e. Jesus was white with blonde
hair), and twice the colorblindness (i.e. sixth anti-sense: “I don’t see black
people.”). And on top of this, they have to struggle to overcome the oppression
of living in predominately white neighborhoods where cycles of privilege and
micro aggressive behaviors go unchallenged and unchecked. History has shown that these urban or suburban areas are dangerous for people of color to
even visit or ask for help (RIP Trayvon Martin, Jonathan Ferrell, etc.).
As usual, the onus is on people of color to do their part if
a change is gonna come. Here are
some ways they can get involved:
First, they could adopt a white child. Forty percent of children who need to be adopted are white. This could prove to be an effective means of preventing the cycle of systemic racism and the burden of oppressing others. Some of you may remember the morally impoverished SAE college students who thought it was a good idea to sing about lynching a n*gger. Had they grown up with parents of color, it is with a 102% certainty (with a 2% margin of error) this behavior would have been avoided. Or, think about college cases where students dressed in black face (see—too many). It is statistically certain that 100% of those cases would have never occurred if those poor, young white kids were raised by people of color. Finally, take the racist police who kill unarmed black people every 28 hours. While all of these officers are not white, studies show that being in the presence of people of color at least 75% of the day decreases chances of being racist by 75%.
If people of color are unable to adopt a white child because it’s hard enough just trying to care for their own, an alternative option is to start a mentoring program that works on self-identity, proper street behavior, appropriate humility, dinner etiquette for interacting with people of color, and practicing behaviors that are anti-racist.
Lastly, people of color might consider simply serving as an ally by helping white youth they interact with confront their racism (see East Chapel Hill flag girls)

So, people of color have one more task to add to their
burden. The world needs them.
White children all across America need them because white parents seem
incapable of rising to the challenge.
Help this country overcome what James Baldwin once called the "most
desperately schizophrenic of republics" and get involved in the life of a
white child today! Remember, it takes a village to raise a child. End generational cycles of racism and
privilege. You could save a white
child’s livelihood and maybe improve your own life chances!
